Review Development Code to Enhance Compact and Sustainable Development (3.G.2.)

At the local level, the City of Bozeman's Unified Development Code (UDC) is one of the most influential documents guiding the form and character of a community. By ensuring the UDC continues to support sustainable development practices Bozeman can move toward a future where households are near the goods, services, and amenities essential to a high quality of life.
- The Planning Division is leading the Bozeman Historic Preservation Policy and Local Landmark Program project which centers on revising the existing historic preservation policy. The project team has collaborated with the Sustainability Division to consider incorporating sustainability practices within the new program. Discussions with the Sustainability Division included adaptive reuse of buildings, demolition provisions, deconstruction practices, alternative building materials, etc.
- In 2024 the Engineering Division completed updates to the Engineering Design and Construction Standards that include sustainability and resiliency considerations.
- The Community Development Division and Utilities Department completed comprehensive landscape water conservation amendments to the UDC in 2024.
- The City started a revision process of the Unified Development Code (UDC). Sustainability is identified as a priority for the project. Proposed updates to the UDC will encourage best practices in the planning and design of bicycle facilities, including but not limited to bicycle parking and pathways.
- The Stormwater Division completed a Low Impact Development review for the City's Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System permit. Low Impact Development advances sustainable stormwater management by mimicking natural systems to mitigate the impacts of runoff by controlling stormwater where it is generated.
- The City is updating the Unified Development Code (UDC) to facilitate increased housing density, infill and redevelopment, housing affordability, climate action plan objectives, sustainable building practices, and a transparent, predictable, and understandable development review process. Completion in 2025 is expected.
- The Planning Division will continue work on the Historic Preservation Policy and Local Landmark Program, the project team will continue to collaborate with the Sustainability Division on incorporating sustainability measures as deemed feasible.
- A member of the community development department and a member of the sustainability division will be on the Legislative Core Team for the 2025 Legislative Session. Local control in land-use was identified as a top priority for the City.
