Use Data and Price Signals to Advance Energy Efficiency (1.A.2.)

Status Indicators: Complete | In Progress| Not Yet Started

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is a system of meters and communication networks that sends and records electricity consumption data in daily (or shorter) intervals. This provides consumers with insight into how and when they are using electricity. To empower customers to reduce their energy use, metering data should be paired with customer engagement tools, time-of-use (TOU) pricing, and programs with incentives. The City of Bozeman will coordinate with NorthWestern Energy and encourage early deployment of AMI for Bozeman residents, as well as encourage NorthWestern Energy to couple AMI with real-time resource consumption and generation source information for their customers.

  • NorthWestern Energy has developed an hourly real-time dashboard of retail load (consumption) and electrical generation by source.
  • The Sustainability Division encouraged energy efficiency and demand response programming as a participant in NorthWestern Energy's Supply Planning Advisory Committee.

  • NorthWestern Energy began installing Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) in Bozeman beginning in 2022 and work will continue through 2024. The Sustainability Division will advocate for the utility to provide customer access to their data, and assist with education and outreach.
